Vegetative development comprises an indispensable phase of development in plants by regulating a serial of physiologically and biochemically important processes as well as reproductive development. Vegetative development consits of juvenile development and adult development. How the juvenile-to-adult transition is achieved determines if the vegetative development can be successfully achieved. miR156 is the master regulator of vegetative development in plants. However, how miR156 is regulated remains largely unknown. Our preliminary work show that miR159, a miRNA previously considered to be regulated by gibberellin, as well as its target, MYB genes, acts upstream of miR156. miR159 and miR156, together with miR319, consitute a complex regulatory network to regulate juvenile-to-adult transition in Arabidopsis. How these miRNAs function and how they organize into a complex network will be studied in this project to elucidate their roles in vegetative development by using gentic, molecular, biochemical approaches.
