The Northern Hemisphere has the most remarkable regional monsoons (including West African monsoon, South Asian monsoon, East Asian monsoon, and North American monsoon). The previous studies paid more attention to effects of land-air interactions over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and ocean-air interactions over the Pacific and Indian Oceans on the East Asian monsoon, especially the relative contributions and interactions between the TP thermodynamic forcing and the tropical ocean temperature modes (e.g., ENSO and the Indian Ocean basin temperature mode) on interannual variations of the onset, advance, and intensity of East Asian summer monsoon (supported by a key project of the NSFC’s Tibetan plan). However, there are little studies on effects of the TP and Pacific/Atlantic thermodynamic functions on the other regional monsoons. Therefore, using observational data at meteorological stations, atmospheric reanalysis datasets, and satellite products as well as statistical analysis, physical diagnosis, and numerical simulation methods, this project will investigate interannual varying features of the TP heating and its links with the Pacific/Atlantic thermodynamic forcing, explore the individual or collaborative impacts of these factors on interannual variability of African, South Asian, and North American monsoons, and compare these impacts with those impacts on the East Asian monsoon. This is distinguished from the previous studies and could deepen our understanding about the mechanisms for collaborative influences of the TP and Pacific/Atlantic thermodynamic functions on interannual variations over the Northern Hemispheric land summer monsoon. This study is also one of the core researches listed in the NSFC’s Tibetan plan.
