In computational materials science, atomistic-continuum coupling methods are a class of multi-scale methods that are widely used in the research of large deformation and the influence of the defects to the macro mechanical properties of crystals. Currently, the research of the atomistic-continuum coupling methods focuses on the construction of different methods and the a priori analysis of their consistency, stability and convergence. However, in this research, we will focus on the a posteriori error estimates and adaptivity of the methods. In particular, we will apply residual-based a posteriori error analysis to some important atomistic-continuum coupling methods to obtain the error bounds and prove their effectiveness. We will also summarize the framework of the a posteriori error estimates of the coupling methods. Based on this, we will analyze some a posteriori error estimators which are of low computational cost and can be employed in real applications and prove its effectiveness and efficiency. In addition, we will develop the self-adaptive algorithms for the coupling methods for model adaptivity and mesh adaptivity. This research may lead to more efficient application of the atomistic-continuum coupling methods and provide theoretical basis of the application of the coupling methods.
