For performance evaluation of a wireless link, two models for delay analysis of packet delivery are introduced. A novel idea of these models is to integrate the related classical queueing theory and stochastic network calculus theory models with empirical models that are constructed from measurements. Specifically, for average packet delay analysis, an equivalent G/G/1 non-lossy queuing model is established, and for delay guarantee analysis, a stochastic service curve characterization of the wireless link is introduced, where related empirical models are integrated. The proposed models are validated by testbed experiments over a 802.15.4 wireless link. Testbed experiments for different traffic patterns are provided to validate the proposed models. The validation results show that the proposed approach to service modeling and delay analysis is useful to quantitative understanding of the packet delivery performance over a wireless link.
